The Islamic Republic of Iran is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations. Shia Islam is the state's official religion. Christianity is 1 of 3 religions outside of Islam recognized by the government, but believers are greatly limited in their freedom to share their faith, and have faced severe persecution.
For believers in the Middle East, meeting with other believers, getting baptised and learning biblical truths are dificult and potentially dangerous. TWR Canada assists those eager to learn to attend week-long conferences outside their home country in safety.
TWR Canada also funds and broadcasts a daily Christian radio program into Iran. Together with the Voice of Christ Media Ministries, Words of Hope, and other organizations, TWR Canada broadcasts 2 hours daily on short wave radio, and 24/7 on satellite radio and Internet. On www.PersianVoice.org people can read messages, books and tracts, and listen to sermons and worship music. Listeners are encouraged to correspond with and speak to spiritual mentors.
In 1979, the people of Iran were promised their country would be ruled with justice and everyone could enjoy peace and prosperity. Sadly, the reality is very different today.
In June 2013, Iran's director of crime prevention expressed deep concern over the increasing crime rate in Iran. It was reported that 1.5 million people were arrested in 2012. 600,000 of those were imprisoned for crimes such as theft, assaults, possession of drugs, drug abuse, murder, rape, and conversion to Christianity.
Yes, becoming a Christian is a crime, and it's punished more severely if the person is caught proselytizing. Jesus continues to build His Church in Iran despite the imprisoning and torturing of Christians, the closing of evangelical churches, the burning of Bibles, the threatening of converts with the death penalty, the blocking of Persian Christian websites, and the jamming of Christian radio programs.
Please pray that believers in Iran would trust in the Lord and, "...Be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." Jeremiah 17:7-8 NIV
"In the name of God I am writing this letter to thank you dear people for what you are doing. Your programs are very good and have caused me to think about spiritual things. I am not a spiritual person, but rather a normal Iranian boy thinking about how I can survive. At the same time, every night when I listen to your program, it seems as if I receive water to quench my thirsty soul."
"...I want to sincerely thank you for your programs. Because of them, I have come to know the Lord and just had the privilege to be baptized. I praise God for the privilege of knowing Him. As long as I live I will not forget that it was your programs that planted the seed in my heart."
